Multiple Sclerosis

What it is

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a condition where the immune system mistakenly attacks the protective coating around nerves in the brain and spinal cord. That coating, called myelin, helps signals travel quickly between the brain and the rest of the body. When it gets damaged, those signals slow down or get scrambled, which is what causes MS symptoms.

What you might notice

Symptoms look different for every person. Some of the most common first signs are blurry vision in one eye, numbness or tingling in a limb, fatigue that does not improve with rest, and trouble with balance.

Why it matters for you

This is the name of the condition you or someone you love is navigating. Understanding the basic idea of what MS is makes every other term on this page easier to follow.

Frequently asked

Is MS a death sentence?
No. Most people with MS have a life expectancy close to the general population. MS is a long-term condition that your care team manages over years.
Is MS contagious?
No. MS is not contagious. It is thought to involve a mix of genetics, immune-system factors, and environmental triggers.
Will I end up in a wheelchair?
Most people with MS do not. Disability varies widely, and modern disease-modifying therapies have meaningfully changed long-term outcomes for many patients.
