Living with MS

Pseudo-exacerbation

What it is

A pseudo-exacerbation is a temporary return or worsening of old MS symptoms caused by something other than new nerve damage. Common triggers include heat, infection, stress, poor sleep, or dehydration. Once the trigger is removed, the symptoms usually fade within a day or so.

Why it matters for you

Telling a true relapse apart from a pseudo-exacerbation changes what you and your doctor do next. Knowing this term can save you a lot of worry when an old symptom briefly reappears.

Questions to ask your doctor

  • Has this lasted more than 24 hours?
  • Could this be a pseudo-exacerbation (heat, infection, stress)?
  • Should I come in for an exam?
  • Would steroid treatment help?
  • Should I go to the ER?
