Living with MS

Spoon Theory

What it is

Spoon theory is a way to talk about limited energy when you have a chronic illness. The idea is that you start each day with a set number of spoons, and every task, from getting dressed to running errands, uses up some of them. Once the spoons are gone, rest is the only way to get more.

Why it matters for you

Spoon theory gives you a simple, visual way to explain energy limits to family, friends, and coworkers. A lot of people in the MS community use it, and you may hear the word spoonie as part of that.

Questions to ask your doctor

  • Could depression, thyroid, low B12, low vitamin D, or sleep apnea be contributing to this?
  • Are there medications that specifically help with MS fatigue?
  • What do you think about amantadine, modafinil, or other stimulants for fatigue?
  • Could my current DMT be making fatigue worse?
  • How can I document my fatigue for work accommodations or disability claims?
