Symptom Management

What it is

Symptom management is the part of MS care that focuses on how you feel day to day, rather than on the underlying disease. It can include medications, physical therapy, occupational therapy, mental health support, sleep care, and lifestyle tools. Most people with MS use a mix of approaches over time.

Why it matters for you

A DMT addresses the disease, but symptom management addresses your life. Both matter, and this term reminds you that the second half of the picture is a real, active area of care.

Questions to ask your doctor

  • Looking at the year overall — am I showing signs of progression, and how are you tracking it year over year?
  • Is it time to switch DMTs based on this year?
  • Should we discuss switching therapies?
  • Are there new MS treatments I should know about?
  • What preventive screenings should I be doing this year?
