Primary Progressive MS (PPMS)

What it is

Primary progressive MS is a form of MS where symptoms gradually build from the very beginning, without the clear relapses and remissions seen in RRMS. About one in ten people with MS has this form. Progression can be fast or slow and varies a lot from person to person.

Why it matters for you

A PPMS diagnosis means your MS story looks different from the more common relapsing pattern. Knowing the term helps separate PPMS information from relapsing-MS information.

Questions to ask your doctor

  • What type of MS do I have, and how confident are you in the diagnosis?
  • Would a second opinion be reasonable? Can you recommend one?
  • What is my likely prognosis over the next 5 to 10 years?
  • Is MS going to shorten my life?
  • What is my risk of eventually needing a wheelchair or mobility aid?
