Secondary Progressive MS (SPMS)

What it is

Secondary progressive MS is a phase some people move into after years of relapsing-remitting MS. In SPMS, symptoms gradually build up over time, with or without clear relapses in between. The shift from RRMS to SPMS can be slow and hard to pin down exactly.

Why it matters for you

If your care team mentions SPMS, they are describing a change in the pattern of how MS is showing up, not a new disease. Understanding the label helps make that shift in language less confusing.

Questions to ask your doctor

  • Looking at the year overall — am I showing signs of progression, and how are you tracking it year over year?
  • Is it time to switch DMTs based on this year?
  • Should we discuss switching therapies?
  • Are there new MS treatments I should know about?
  • What preventive screenings should I be doing this year?
