EDSS (Expanded Disability Status Scale)

What it is

The EDSS is a scale from 0 to 10 that doctors use to describe how much MS is affecting physical function, especially walking. Lower numbers mean little or no impact, while higher numbers describe more mobility challenges. The score comes from a neurological exam, not a lab test.

Why it matters for you

You may see an EDSS score in your chart or hear it mentioned at appointments. Knowing what it measures, and what it does not measure, helps you read it as one piece of the picture.

Questions to ask your doctor

  • Am I showing any signs of progression?
  • Should we discuss switching therapies?
  • Are there new treatments I should know about?
  • How does my disability score compare to last year?
  • Should I see any other specialists?
