Foot Drop

What it is

Foot drop is trouble lifting the front of the foot while walking, which can cause the toes to drag or catch. It happens when the nerves that control the muscles in the lower leg are affected. It can come and go, and many people use braces, physical therapy, or devices to help with it.

What you might notice

A toe that catches on carpets or sidewalks. A slapping sound when your foot lands. Tripping on small objects you used to clear without thinking.

Why it matters for you

Foot drop can increase the chance of trips and falls. The term connects a specific walking change with common mobility supports such as braces, physical therapy, and assistive devices.

Questions to ask your doctor

  • Is this nerve pain or muscle pain? Does the treatment differ?
  • Would baclofen, tizanidine, or gabapentin help?
  • Would pregabalin, duloxetine, or an SNRI be better for nerve pain?
  • Should I see a pain specialist or physiatrist?
  • Is physical therapy likely to help?
