Spasticity

What it is

Spasticity is unusual stiffness or tightness in muscles, often in the legs. It can feel like a muscle that will not relax, a sudden jerk, or resistance when you try to move. It can make walking, sleeping, or sitting comfortably more difficult.

What you might notice

Legs that feel stiff or heavy, especially first thing in the morning. Sudden jerks or cramping, particularly at night. A leg that does not swing through a stride the way it used to.

Why it matters for you

Spasticity is common in MS and has a lot of management options, from stretching and physical therapy to medications. Naming it makes the symptom easier to separate from ordinary cramps or soreness.

Questions to ask your doctor

  • Is this nerve pain or muscle pain? Does the treatment differ?
  • Would baclofen, tizanidine, or gabapentin help?
  • Would pregabalin, duloxetine, or an SNRI be better for nerve pain?
  • Should I see a pain specialist or physiatrist?
  • Is physical therapy likely to help?
